Word add-in & AI authoring

The DocsNG add-in for Microsoft Word turns template authoring into point-and-click, and AI assistance turns a sample document or a plain-English instruction into a ready template — no syntax to memorise.

Installing the add-in

The DocsNG add-in runs in Word on the web, Windows and Mac. Install it from your organisation's add-in catalogue or by sideloading the manifest that points at your DocsNG instance. Once installed, open it from the DocsNG tab → Open DocsNG task pane, then sign in with your DocsNG credentials.

The field picker

The task pane lists your data models, their fields and relations. Click a field to insert the correct merge field («Model.Field») at the cursor; click a repeating model or relation to insert balanced RangeStart/RangeEnd markers — you never type the syntax. The picker is type-aware, so date, number, currency and boolean fields offer the relevant formatting options.

  • Insert fields, ranges and nested relations by clicking.
  • Insert conditional sections and formatters from the UI (see Template authoring).
  • Insert images, QR codes and barcodes bound to data.

Live validation

As you author, the add-in validates the template against your DocsNG instance and flags problems inline — unbalanced or mis-nested ranges, unknown models/fields (with suggestions for likely typos), and invalid formatters — before you generate anything.

Preview & publish from Word

Preview the template against a sample entry and see the rendered PDF without leaving Word. When you're happy, publish a new template version straight to DocsNG — each publish creates a new version you can roll back to.

AI-assisted authoring

Sample document → template

Point the assistant at a sample Word or PDF document and it proposes a template, mapping merge fields to a chosen data model. The draft opens in the add-in for you to review and adjust before saving — nothing is published automatically.

Natural-language editing

Describe what you want (“insert a signature block for the account manager”, “add a totals row”) and the assistant inserts the correct markers, conditionals and formatters at the cursor. You always confirm the change before it is applied.

AI features are optional and can be disabled. In air-gapped deployments they are hidden unless a local model is configured, and only the minimum necessary context is sent to the model.

Syntax stays in sync

The add-in builds every marker from a versioned template-syntax contract published by your DocsNG instance, and checks compatibility on connect — so what you author always matches what the engine will render.
